Gertrude (Hird) (Heighes) Membrino, age 87, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2013 in Clearwater, FL. She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years Clifford Heighes Sr. in 1977. She was born on September 8th in 1925 at the family home in Forge Village where she lived her entire life. She was raised by her grandparents Susie and Bert Comey. As a teenager she played basketball for Westford Academy. During WW II she took her turn with other townsfolk to man the observation tower in Westford Center to spot for enemy planes, and worked with service organizations in the support of troops. She worked at Abbott Worsted mill in the Village, taught at the Westford Preschool at St. Marks, and worked at Acton Medical in Acton. In her latter years she worked to help build the Cameron Senior Center to what it has become today. She served for several years on the Friends of Cameron board and also came out of retirement to be the receptionist there for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed flowers, gardening, bowling and of course, her Red Sox. She leaves behind her longtime companion Charles Vanlandeghem; Her three Children, Clifford Heighes of NC, Nancy Scroggins of VA and David Heighes of MA as well as ten grandchildren, Holly McNeil of MD, Roger Scroggins of NH, Cindy Harrison of NC, Joshua Scroggins of ME, Kristy Heighes and Clifford Heighes both of NH and Candace Heighes, Krystle Heighes, Brandie Heighes and Samantha Heighes of MA. She also leaves behind 5 Great-Grandchildren, Randall Scroggins and Aaralyn Scroggins, Brendan Harrison and Ronan Harrison, and Andrew Scroggins. She was much loved by her family and friends and will be sorely missed. It being her request, there will be no calling hours. Cremation took place in Florida. Relatives & Friends are invited to attend her Memorial Funeral Service at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Westford on Sat. Mar. 23, 2013 at 10:00 am, Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westford.
